A screenshot, a phone photo, a Canva export and a professionally prepared PDF all fail preflight in different ways — and they need different answers. Prepta classifies the likely origin of a file first, then decides what is reasonable to attempt.

Most artwork problems have one correct answer for a given production profile. Those get resolved before an operator ever opens the file. Everything else is labelled, explained and handed over.

The point of automation is not to touch every file. It is to remove the decisions that were never decisions, and to put the real ones in front of the person qualified to make them.

What is prepress automation?

Prepress automation is software performing the file-preparation steps a prepress operator would otherwise do by hand: checking artwork against production requirements, correcting what has one correct answer, and preparing an output file for production. The operator stays responsible for judgement calls; the repetitive checking and correcting is handled automatically.

What is PDF preflight?

PDF preflight is the process of checking a PDF against the technical requirements of a print workflow before production. A preflight check typically covers page size and trim, bleed, colour space and profiles, effective image resolution, font embedding, transparency, overprint and PDF standard compliance. Preflight reports problems; it does not by itself fix them.

Is Prepta just another PDF preflight checker?

No. Preflight is one step inside it. Prepta first classifies what kind of file arrived — a professional PDF behaves very differently from a screenshot or a Canva export — then preflights it against your production profile, applies the repairs that profile marks as safe, validates the result, and escalates anything requiring judgement. The output is a production file plus a record of what changed, not a list of errors.

Can Prepta automatically fix PDF files?

It can apply the repairs your production profile allows. Typical automatic repairs are RGB to CMYK conversion against a named output profile, bleed generation where surrounding content makes it safe, transparency flattening where the workflow requires it, cut contour generation where the geometry is unambiguous, and vector cleanup. Anything outside that set is proposed or escalated rather than applied.

Can Prepta convert RGB to CMYK?

Yes, using the output profile configured in your production profile rather than a generic conversion. The conversion is recorded in the audit trail with the source and destination profiles, so the result can be checked later. Where a colour cannot be reproduced in the target gamut, the shift is reported rather than passed silently to production.

Can Prepta add bleed?

Where it is safe to do so. Bleed can be generated by extending artwork that continues to the trim edge, or by mirroring edge content. When the artwork stops at the trim, or critical content sits in the way, Prepta reports the missing bleed instead of inventing it. Your profile sets the required amount.

Can Prepta detect low-resolution images?

Yes — measured as effective DPI at the final output size, which is the number that matters. A 300 dpi image scaled to 400% is a 75 dpi image. If the result falls below your profile minimum, Prepta reports the measurement and the affected area rather than upscaling it.

Can Prepta detect Canva exports and phone photos?

It reports a likely source with a confidence level, based on file structure and image characteristics. Canva-style exports, Office-generated PDFs, screenshots, camera photos, web assets and professionally prepared PDFs each leave recognisable traces. This is stated as a likelihood, never as a certainty, and it informs the recommendation rather than overriding your profile rules.

What happens when Prepta cannot safely fix a file?

It stops and explains why, with the measurement behind the decision and a concrete recommendation — usually requesting specific replacement artwork. A file can be marked REVIEW, where an operator confirms or adjusts a proposed fix, or BLOCK, where it cannot go to production as supplied. Nothing is silently approximated.

Does Prepta replace a prepress operator?

No. It removes the checks and corrections that have one correct answer, so operator time goes to the files that genuinely need expertise. Deciding whether a job is acceptable to print remains a human decision, and every automatic change is visible and reversible.

What is a production profile?

A production profile is the set of rules for one of your workflows: accepted formats, colour requirements and output profile, bleed, minimum effective DPI, transparency handling, cut contour requirements, output format, and which repairs may be applied automatically. Profiles are versioned, and each processed job records the profile version it was validated against.

What file formats does Prepta support?

PDF and common raster formats today. Which of those are acceptable for a given job is set by your production profile — a large-format profile may accept TIFF, while a digital print profile may accept PDF only and route everything else to review. Support for further source formats is in development and is not available yet.
