Does PDF transparency matter for print?
Short answer
Live transparency and blend modes are allowed in many modern PDF/X-4 workflows, but some cutters, older RIPs and spot-colour pipelines still need flattening. Whether transparency is a problem depends on the destination profile — check against that profile before production.
Why it shows up in customer files
Design tools leave opacity, soft shadows and blend modes live because that is how the canvas works. The PDF is often structurally valid and looks correct on screen. Downstream, a device that cannot composite those effects will print wrong or reject the file.

When flattening is the right answer
If the finishing device or RIP profile requires flattened output, flatten early with a known profile rather than hoping the RIP will. Flattening can change appearance slightly; critical colour work should be soft-proofed after flatten.

When you can leave it live
PDF/X-4 and many modern large-format RIPs accept live transparency. Forcing a flatten then can introduce unnecessary rasterisation. The production profile — not a generic “always flatten” rule — should decide.
