What is PDF/X-4 for print?
Short answer
PDF/X is a family of ISO standards that constrain how a PDF is prepared for print exchange. PDF/X-4 is widely requested by print portals and RIPs because it identifies the file as print-ready and carries an output intent. Many free and shop tools check for those markers; full ISO conformance testing is a deeper process.
What the markers are for
A PDF/X file typically declares a GTS_PDFXVersion string and an OutputIntent that names the intended printing condition. Downstream systems use those identifiers to decide whether the file was prepared for print exchange, and which colour space assumptions to apply. Without them, a RIP or portal may reject the upload even if the artwork itself looks fine.

Marker check vs full validation
Looking for the version string and OutputIntent is a useful early warning — and it is what many automated intakes do first. Full PDF/X-4 ISO validation additionally tests a long list of forbidden constructs and required properties. Claiming “PDF/X validated” after a marker-only check would be misleading; saying “PDF/X markers missing” is honest and actionable.
Do you always need PDF/X?
Not every shop requires it. Internal workflows with known designers may accept well-built PDFs without PDF/X identification. Customer portals, agency handoffs and many commercial RIPs do require it. If the order form says PDF/X-4, failing the marker check is a signal to re-export from the design app with the right preset — or to repair inside a production profile that targets that delivery.
